- I — Illness
- M — Medication
- S — Stress
- A — Alcohol
- F — Fatigue
- E — Emotion

The Kitchen Walkthrough: A Mental Movie
Picture yourself at home.
You’re standing in your kitchen, feeling terribly sick — maybe even throwing up.
That’s Illness.
You walk over to the cabinet where you keep your meds and take something.
That’s Medication.
Suddenly the phone rings. It’s the bank telling you they’re foreclosing on your home.
Your stomach drops. That’s Stress.
You walk to the liquor cabinet… and instead of pouring a drink, you dump it all down the sink.
That’s Alcohol.
You feel drained. You go to your room and lie down for a nap.
That’s Fatigue.
As you lie there, overwhelmed, you call a friend and cry on the phone.
That’s Emotion.
Kitchen → Meds → Bad news → Liquor → Nap → Emotional call.
IMSAFE — in order.
Why This Works
This technique uses something called a memory palace (also known as the method of loci).
Instead of trying to memorize abstract words, you:
Attach each item to a physical location
Add emotion and vivid imagery
Link them together into a story
Your brain remembers stories and places far better than bullet points. The human brain is highly visual, and creating a little mental movie connecting the words to a different room will make it extremely easy to remember. The more exaggerated and emotional the scene, the stronger the memory.
When you mentally “walk” through the house, the checklist unfolds automatically.
This technique is quite powerful for any type of list that needs to be remembered, and can also be applied to remember PAVE, GUMPs, 5Ps, etc.
You can create any story you would like, but a good practice is to choose a different location for each checklist. So if you used your home for the IMSAFE checklist, use your friend's house, a relative's house, your kid's school, etc. for the others.
You don't necessarily need to use this memory trick to memorize this (practice alone, especially active recall, will work too), but it can be a useful memory tool to leverage.
